WSA Gatorade Hoppy Swarts Memorial West Coast Championships Results

The WSA Gatorade Hoppy Swarts Memorial West Coast Championships closed out the 49th year of WSA competition with a bang.  Over 320 surfers surfed the requisite 5 regular season events to qualify for this year’s West Coast Championship making this the biggest West Coast Championships event in WSA history!  Church Beach in San Onofre State Beach, May 14 & 15, was the scene of the family reunion like atmosphere of this awesome competition as families gathered on the beach to cheer all the competitors on.

WSA sponsors Bull Taco and Nalu’s Island Grill provided great grinds for everyone throughout the weekend and Gatorade had plenty of Gatorade and Gatorade Prime on hand to keep the competitors hydrated and at peak performanceSticky Bumps ran a Day-Glo Wax Art Contest for the little Rembrandts on the beach and Sticky Bumps president and founder, John Dahl, was on hand to witness the tremendous growth in WSA.  Maddie James Foundation ran an Opportunity drawing to benefit the foundation and tons of great prizes were awarded.  PopChips was on the beach with a copious supply of delicious, nutritious PopChips.  Never Fried.  Never Baked. TransWorld Surf was onsite running their version of Surf Yahtzee, giving away tons of TransWorld Surf swag to the groms.  Surf Coach USA owner and USA Surf Team Assistant Coach, Sean Mattison, ran a clinic on mental preparation and heat strategy for all the competitors, stressing his approach of controlling the variables you can control in surfing – preparation, nutrition, planning your heat strategy and executing that strategy.

The level of surfing has gone through the roof, as surfers vie for coveted slots in the Surfing America USA Championships at the Huntington Beach Pier and Lower Trestles to crown the undisputed USA Surfing Champions.  The Boys U18, U16, U14 and Girls U18 and U16 were scratching for valuable points to earn a slot in the Surfing America Prime series, the highest level of junior amateur competition in the Nation.  USA Surf Team Coach and “Bustin’ Down the Door” legend, Ian Cairns, swung by to impart some helpful competition tips and information on the clear path from WSA to Surfing America Prime to Surfing America USA Championships to a slot on the PacSun USA Surf Team and a professional career if desired.  He also presented the trophies in the awards ceremony.

San Diego’s Terry Gillard won the Gatorade “Go All Day” Award for surfing to finals in 3 divisions, while winning two, and taking home season champion titles in both Senior Longboard and Open Men’s Longboard division.  Terry competes with a great spirit of camaraderie, sportsmanship and stoke.  He takes home an awesome custom trophy and a one year supply of Gatorade!

Kevin Schulz of San Clemente not only clinched the win and the season champion title in Boys U16, he also was the recipient of the Midget Smith Memorial Sportsmanship Award for his conduct throughout the season and especially the West Coast Championships.  This award is presented by USA Surf Team Assistant Coach and owner of Surf Coach USA, Sean Mattison, and includes a week of advanced surf training with Sean this summer.

Spencer Fanticola and Ellie Bosse were the “Most Improved Boy and Girls Under 12” for their amazing rise in the rankings this season.  They both earned a week at Cola’s Surf Camp this summer.

After 22 hours of competition running double areas our panels of ASP judges awarded the following surfers the scores to make the podium and earn West Coast Champion Titles.

DSC Opens San Clemente Training Facility

Dean Sports Consulting (DSC), the original surf specific comprehensive training program, is pleased to announce the opening of its San Clemente Training Facility.  Located in the infamous “Surf Ghetto” at 201 Calle de los Molinos, DSC’s San Clemente location will provide South Orange County and San Diego North County clients with convenient access to the full spectrum of DSC training including Foundational Surf Training – which is offered to anyone interested in stepping up their surf game, keeping healthy, properly preparing for the sport, and even for those desiring to prolong their surfing ability later in life.

DSC Team Training is only offered to those qualified to join the DSC team.  Through its guiding philosophy that states: “Your character is more important than your competition”, DSC individually selects each surfer that participates in the team-training program.

Regular training, video review, goal setting, nutrition, and more are supplied to those chosen to join the DSC team.  The consistent video review assists a DSC trainer in providing more specifically targeted exercises, nutritional support, sport psychology (with assistance from a highly qualified staff sport psychology consultant), heat strategy and management, and yearly goal setting exercises.

The DSC program is run and operated by a very experienced staff headed up by licensed physical therapist and board certified orthopedic specialist, Kevyn Dean.  Kevyn is the medical director and lead trainer for Surfing America and the PacSun USA Surf Team.

DSC trains top-level surfers including:  Brett Simpson, Nate Yeomans, Courtney Conlogue, Shaun Ward, Trevor Thornton, Taylor Clark, and Kanoa Igarashi.  International standouts include:  Matt Hewitt (New Zealand’s open men’s champion) and Italy’s Leo Fiorvanti.

DSC takes a holistic approach to surf training, addressing not only strength, endurance and mobility specific to surfing, but also nutritional and mental aspects of attaining peak performance.
