WSA GOLD IS HERE
A new elite series for the West Coast’s best junior surfers
Limited fields, professional judging, computer scoring and priority in every heat. WSA Gold creates a clear pathway from WSA to the USA Surfing Championships and USA Surfing Prime.
Newland Street
Huntington Beach
The Newland Street contest is a standalone proof of concept. It will not count toward qualification, seeding or rankings for the 2027/2028 WSA Gold season.
It Is Not Too Late to Begin the Road to WSA Gold
Start October 10 & 11 at 9th Street
Surfers who have not competed in WSA yet this season can begin at 9th Street in Huntington Beach and still complete the six event minimum required to qualify for the WSA West Coast Championships.
The same applies to surfers who want to compete up an age division but have not yet entered that older division. Beginning at 9th Street keeps the opportunity open to qualify for the inaugural 2027/2028 WSA Gold season.
Planned Newland Field Sizes
| Division | Boys | Girls |
|---|---|---|
| U12 | 8 | 8 |
| U14 | 16 | 16 |
| U16 | 24 | 24 |
| U18 | 16 | 16 |
Field sizes are subject to change.
U12 Opportunity
USA Surfing Prime begins at U14. WSA Gold gives the best U12 boys and girls the opportunity to compete in the same high level format while preparing for the next step.
Gender Parity
Every age group includes both boys and girls divisions with matching planned field sizes and equal competitive opportunity.
Finalist Awards
Trophies and prizes will be presented to all finalists. Breakfast, lunch and drinks will be provided during the event.
No Schedule Conflicts
Regular WSA, WSA Gold and USA Surfing Prime dates will be coordinated so qualified surfers can compete in all three programs.
Invitations and Registration
The Full WSA Gold Series Begins in 2027/2028
Qualification and seeding will be based on each surfer’s best six results from the regular WSA season, plus the WSA West Coast Championships. The age up process will then determine qualification and seeding in the appropriate WSA Gold division.
WSA Gold surfers must finish within the top 33 percent of their division, based on their best three results from four Gold events, to retain their place for the following season. For most surfers, competing in both regular WSA and WSA Gold will provide the strongest pathway forward.
USA Surfing Championships
Subject to USA Surfing age eligibility criteria, the top two surfers in each WSA Gold division from the 2027/2028 season will receive invitations to the 2028 USA Surfing Championships. WSA invitations will be awarded exclusively through WSA Gold.
USA Surfing Prime
Top WSA Gold finishers will receive invitations to USA Surfing Prime for the 2028/2029 season. The number of available positions in each division will be determined by USA Surfing.
WSA Created the Original Prime Series
In 2008, WSA invented the Prime Series to provide America’s best junior surfers with a higher level of competition and a pathway to international success. In 2009, WSA gifted the Prime Series to USA Surfing so it could be expanded across the country.
Now we are bringing it back with WSA Gold.
