May 2 & 3, 2026 - Newland Street, Huntington Beach, CA

Hi Competitors!

Here are the heat draws and schedule for this weekends WSA West Coast Championships. Download them HERE.

This email contains a lot of information, so please read completely.  We will be at the Newland Street entrance of Huntington Beach State Beach. Parking is $15 a day and they do accept the State Parks Beach Pass.  If the Newland Street entrance is closed in the morning you can drive south to Magnolia Street and then drive north once in the park. Attached are the schedule and heat draws for the WSA West Coast Championships along with the WSL Rules for Priority. We will have 4 person 15 minute heats with a water start along with computer scoring and for U12 and older division, computer priority. There will be a 20 - 30 second delay between heats. All finals will be 20 minutes. You can download the STACT app to follow live scoring. For West Coast Season Champion titles this event is worth 2500 points for 1st. Please see attached points scale the last page of attachment. Season Champions will be named based on their top 6 (top 4 for Adaptive divisions) regular season events plus their West Coast Championships scores

As we stated before, all divisions can run either Saturday or Sunday. We worked with NSSA to avoid conflicts with their Open Season event at the Huntington Beach Pier.  Please check the schedule closely and make sure you are there Saturday if your division starts on Saturday.

Please listen to beach marshal’s instruction when checking in. Our WSL priority judges will be at the beach marshal at 6:30 each morning to explain priority and answer questions.

Make sure to bring your canteen (Hydroflask, Yeti, Stanley, etc.) to fill up at our H2O Depot filtered water hydration station. No bottled water will be handed out. Both breakfast and lunch will be provided for competitors and family.   Got Milk? will be at the beach providing white and chocolate milk and some cool giveaways. SunBum will provide sunscreen and, of course, Sticky Bumps will be there with the wax! Salt Life will be hosting a beach clean up with the chance to win a new custom Surf Prescription SurfboardJack’s Surfboards will be on the beach with games and spin the wheel for prizes. They will give away a soft top surfboard on Saturday and a beach set up on Sunday (Chairs, Umbrella, Beach Towels)!

Competitors, please remember to pick up your Rick Erkeneff designed event T-shirt. If we have extras, we will make them available to parents and siblings (before awards).

Here are head judge Pat Downey’s competitor notes:

Head Judges Notes - Huntington Beach WSA WCC, May 2-3, 2036

Congratulations and welcome to all competitors who qualified for this season ending event.

Looks like we’ll have some smaller size surf this weekend at Newland Street. The wind will be moderate in the mid day/afternoon. These conditions should be like this for both days. Looks like we’ll have knee to waist high surf with fair conditions.

Judging will be focused on the  surfers who can find and execute quality combinations. We will also be rewarding single MAJOR powerful and progressive maneuvers if performed in the most critical of sections. As always, we are looking for clean execution with, speed, power and good timing/flow between these moments. These will be the comparison points.

Longboard criteria:

The Surfer must perform controlled maneuvers in the critical section of the wave utilizing the entire board and wave  using traditional longboard surfing. The surfer who performs this to the highest degree of difficulty with the most style flow, and grace will receive the highest score for a ride.

Key elements for judges to consider: Nose riding in the critical section of the wave, variety of maneuvers, speed and power, control, commitment, control and foot work!

Push-In and Adaptive Divisions criteria - please view page 5 of the WSA Rulebook “Fundamental Surfing"

Please remember for maneuvers to be deemed complete, the surfer must show control and ride out  in front of the white wash. Any loss of control will hinder the score of that ride.

*** Also please note, if you surf beyond the flag and the outside the competition area, you risk not being seen clearly ***

Good luck and have a great weekend everyone. 🍀

See you on the beach!
